NECROMASS ITALY

Necromass - Abyss Calls Life

From deep within the swirling mad vortex that calls itself Italian Black Metal, Necromass mixes in some primitive death and doom sounds with their typically melodramatic hate opera.  The over-the-top foppery of most Italian metal is subdued here, replaced with a cool restraint that makes the wilder moments that much more potent.  Much of the album grooves along at a nice mid-tempo gallop, punctuated by twin leads and unpredictable mood swings.  Vocalist Charles Blasphemy (what a name) growls with gusto as well, more in the style of the Swedish death scene than the typical second-wave tortured wail.  Another forgotten treasure from the underworld, brought to you with nothing but contempt and malice.

The Mummies were the ultimate lo-fi garage punk noise act, partially a nutty monster novelty group but also the best band playing in the style, hands down.  There's a lot more than just caveman rock here too: surf, bluesy vamps, biker anthems, spooky haunted house themes, instructional dance numbers, and frat rock classics, all smashed up into one glorious fucked up mess.  This first LP is only the beginning of a long stretch of classic material, but it's as good a place to start as any.

Mientras tanto, compartir conmigo este nudo horrible de carbón que encontré en mi buzón de entrada. Otra banda de metal a un hombre loco en el modo de Castaño Jenkins o Aarni, este Ygolonac parece obsesionado con los grimorios de ficción del Mythos, de lo que puede ser descifrado a partir de los títulos de las canciones y el nombre de la banda. Ygolonac es el señor de la perversa y sádica, la única Viejo exterior de Nyarlathotep insidiosa capaz de tomar forma humana, y conocidos por las bocas voraces gritando por la sangre de sus palmas y la ingle, tradicionalmente elegida para el papel de comisariado de la biblioteca del suprimido tomos que tienden a conducir mentes mundanas en la locura. Brutal y amargamente divertida "Imprimir Fría" de Ramsey Campbell es tal vez la mejor historia Lovecraftian producido en los años setenta, y mientras el ambiente retro de este debut desagradable es, probablemente, la intención de trascender el tiempo y el espacio, que puede sentir un poco cokestache discoteca bajo todo el ruido , tal vez sólo ralentizado 800x.

One of the lesser known bands of the NWOBHM, with one of the main collectibles. This self-released EP by OVERDRIVE has three songs – and they’re all great! A bit on the SAXON-side of things, with reminiscence of SCARAB, but as always with these bands, you wouldn’t do OVERDRIVE much justice neglecting their very own, very original take on the emerging NWOBHM formula.
9 years after this, the band released a full LP, independently again. It’s a bit of a mixed bag, with some good songs and some stinkers.

PS: In 2011, Grantham (OVERDRIVE’s hometown, immortalized in the band’s label name) has been voted “most boring town in the UK” in the british newspaper Guardian. Seems like not much has changed there.
